Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, answered God’s call early—entering the seminary in Buenos Aires and embracing a life of simplicity and study before his ordination in 1969. For decades as a priest and then as Archbishop and Cardinal of Buenos Aires (1998 – 2013), he walked among the poor and preached mercy with a gentle heart.
Elected in March 2013, he became the “pope of mercy,” urging global solidarity, care for creation, and outreach to the marginalized. His joyful witness and humble service reshaped our understanding of Church.
