How did Pope Francis like his coffee?

We join faithful around the world in mourning Pope Francis, a man of humble heart who showed us that holiness often hides in everyday moments—even in the simple pleasure of a morning brew. Just as Pope Clement VIII once blessed coffee centuries ago, our beloved pontiffs have long shaped how we welcome this gift into our lives.

Pope Francis himself was never shy about his fondness for a quiet café pause. In a 2009 profile by La Nación, then-Cardinal Bergoglio admitted, “I like to walk the Italian capital and take ristretto in cafeterias, leaning against the counter.”

(A ristretto is a short shot of espresso pulled with the same amount of finely ground coffee but about half the water—resulting in a richer, more concentrated flavor. For more on different espressos, explore our espresso guide!)

And even as Sovereign Pontiff, he chose simplicity over opulence—favoring modest quarters, homemade meals, and moments of prayer over grand ceremonies. Each of those quiet pauses with coffee became, for him, a humble way to take a pause and enter into and enjoy the presence of God.

In the hush of morning, we invite you to turn your daily ritual into an act of remembrance. Pause as you pour your coffee.
☕ Breathe it in. Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Allow each cup to become a prayerful tribute to the Pope whose life reminded us that faith and fragrance go hand in hand.

May each sacred sip draw you closer to the peace Pope Francis cherished—grounded in faith, shared in community.

As you take your morning coffee, join us in prayer for the repose of Pope Francis’s soul:

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

May the soul of Pope Francis, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
